Ezra Miller promises The Flash solo movie will still be made, despite the many delays. Like many of the DCEU’s stars, Miller has been attached to the role of Barry Allen for years, but has yet to star in a solo movie. The project is still in development with current directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, and it sounds like Miller has full confidence in the plan.

The young star has already made three appearances in the DCEU, but only his role in Justice League gave him anything of significance to do. His appearances in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad were merely cameos used to keep him around while his solo movie went through a number of changes. Daley and Goldstein are the latest lined up to direct, after Phil Lord and Chris Miller flirted with the idea, Seth Grahame-Smith left, and then Rick Famuyiwa exited. The director changes have also appeared to impact the story of the film, which at one point was titled Flashpoint, but no longer is. The movie has taken so many detours that it already missed the March 2018 release date that was set back in 2014. Despite all of these problems, Miller maintains we all just need to trust the process.

As part of a wide-ranging profile, Playboy spoke to Miller about his life and career. The conversation eventually turned to the status of his solo superhero movie and whether or not he was worried about the project ever getting off the ground. His passion for the character and the movie are evident as he hypes up The Flash and promises it is still coming - even if it will be later than some expected.

This quote from Miller comes on the heels of another development for The Flash that appeared to be a step back. Throughout much of this year, it continued to look more and more likely that the movie would film in the first half of 2019 and make a spring or summer 2020 release possible. Due to Miller’s involvement in the Fantastic Beasts franchise and the success of this other WB series, The Flash’s production has been delayed again so he can film Fantastic Beasts 3 instead. This puts the projected release of the solo movie to 2021.

Nothing is ever certain in this world, but as certain as things get, we’re making a f****** crazy-dope Flash movie. It’s one of my great life dreams, and just the fact that we’re on the way—anyone who knows about Barry Allen knows he may arrive late, very late, but once he gets there, it’s all solved. We have to trust.

While fans may understandably be frustrated with the slow development on the solo movie for DC’s fastest hero, many would benefit to take a page out of Miller’s book in how he views the property. As much as he would love to star in the movie right now, it is better for the movie to take longer to hit and be great than for it to rush through production to hit a release date and be terrible. Miller sounds like he has complete trust in his directors and DC Films head Walter Hamada - or he is just choosing to be incredibly optimistic about the project as a whole. So even though The Flash isn’t coming out next year or even the year after that, hopefully it will be worth the wait whenever it does arrive.
