Though season 1 of the series was well received by critics and viewers alike, Fleabag season 2 was even more of a phenomenon when it released earlier this year. The second season introduced The Priest (Andrew Scott) for a love story throughline that won over audiences - with Scott’s character gaining the nickname “Hot Priest.” Considering the amount of praise heaped on Fleabag season 2, it made sense the show was nominated for a number of Emmy Awards. However, while Fleabag took home quite a few Emmys, it appears the show will not continue on.
As reported by the L.A. Times, Waller-Bridge confirmed Fleabag season 3 won’t happen while speaking to press backstage at the 71st Emmy Awards. After winning the awards for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Comedy Series, Waller-Bridge said, “This just feels like the most beautiful, beautiful way to say goodbye to it. It does feel nice to go out on a high. You can’t get higher than this.” Fleabag also took home the awards for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series - going to Harry Bradbeer and Gary Dollner, respectively - both for the season 2 premiere, and Olivia Scott-Webb was awarded Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series.
Based on Waller-Bridge’s comment at the Emmys, it certainly seems as if the writer has closed the door on Fleabag, which may disappoint and/or be a relief to fans. After all, Fleabag season 2 was so well received, fans would no doubt love to see more about the character. However, many would also argue the ending of Fleabag season 2 is too perfect and doing a third season would ruin the finality of it. It’s certainly possible that Waller-Bridge could come up with a fantastic idea for Fleabag season 3, but it doesn’t seem as if that’s a focus for the writer-actress at the moment.
Certainly, Waller-Bridge has plenty of other projects on her plate, having created the similarly popular Killing Eve and being tapped to help work on the script for James Bond 25, titled No Time to Die. Plus, with her Emmy wins in hand, Waller-Bridge will no doubt have many more opportunities in the months and years to come. So while Fleabag season 3 won’t be happening, fans of the series can look forward to other projects from its creator.
