Although Fortnite players already have plenty on their collective plates, some suspect that there could even be an incoming comet impact to contend with. The game’s Battle Royale mode is one of the most popular games around at the moment, drawing in players through a mixture of its addictive and easy-to-grasp gameplay and it’s highly tempting free-to-play entry point.

Although the game has a huge player base, those users are wondering exactly what Epic Games has planned now that Fortnite has taken over the world. After all, it’s only so long that a game such as this can remain entertaining without new content, and although there have been some tweaks and updates alongside the introduction of cross-play that came with the mobile release of Fortnite, many feel there’s still plenty of room for the game to expand.

Some suspect, however, that Epic Games has some major changes planned, and that it all ties to a celestial body that can be seen overhead in the game. Players have noticed what appears to be a comet or a meteor in the night sky, leading some Fortnite players to look into the matter further and conclude that it is heading straight for the Battle Royale map. Here’s a look at the comet courtesy of Reddit user Niccorazi, who managed to get a good glimpse at the mysterious object in action prior to the most recent update for the game.

With the latest update for Fortnite the comet appears ever so slightly more defined, leading to the idea of a Deep Impact-esque situation gaining even more traction - particularly since a look at the source files of Fortnite turned up a particularly suspicious-looking asset. All in all, this has led to a theory that the comet in question is heading straight for Tilted Towers, with some suspecting that the area overall could see an apocalyptic makeover.

It would certainly be a dramatic change of scenery for Fortnite’s Battle Royale, although should this theory ring true then it remains to be see what it will change about the game as a whole. Some players have been hoping that it could even mean some nice alien environments to explore, which would certainly be a curveball to rival the 2018 plans for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

Should the comet lead to a change to the map, or even a fun secret area for savvy players to access, then those Fortnite players who have caught on early will certainly be earning that little bit of a extra kudos. At the moment nothing has been confirmed, but at the very least these discussions will have caught the eye of Epic Games, so anything is possible.
