Thanos won’t be terrifying the world of Fortnite for much longer. Developer Epic Games announced that the limited-time crossover event between their hit free-to-play shooter and Avengers: Infinity War is coming to an end tomorrow. While no specific time was given for when the Infinity Gauntlet Limited Time Mashup will make its exit, it will likely go down once Tuesday’s weekly patch hits at 4 am EST.
The surprise crossover event took the gaming world by storm when it was announced out of nowhere last Monday. The unprecedented crossover saw two bonafide pop culture phenomenons come together. The mode was a twist on the third-person shooter’s Battle Royale offering, as it allowed players to find the Infinity Gauntlet and control Thanos himself. The change added a new dynamic to the fast-paced action, and it wound up being a hit with fans.
While the Infinity Gauntlet Limited Time Mashup seemed random when it was announced, there was actually a logical reason for it to happen. Avengers: Infinity War co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo are huge fans of the free-to-play shooter, and they decided to reach out to Epic about it. Joe Russso told EW: “Over the past few months, while we were editing Infinity War, we’d take breaks to hop on and get in a few games. And then we started thinking, how cool would it be to have some kind of Avengers–Fortnite mashup? So we stalked [Epic Games creative director] Donald [Mustard].”
Reception to the Fortnite and Avengers: Infinity War crossover mode has been quite positive from both fans and press. As such, there’s already been some outcry on social media of players that are disappointed that the exciting mode will be taking its leave so soon. It was, of course, marketed as a limited-time promotion, so it can’t be too much of a surprise that it is exiting the rotation.
This is a business, though, and it’s entirely possible that the mode will pop up once again in the future. Plenty of multiplayer games have seen limited events turn into larger additions due to feedback. While it’s unlikely this would ever become a mainstay, it wouldn’t be shocking to see it come back once Avengers: Infinity War releases on Blu-ray and DVD later this year or when the Russos’ untitled Avengers 4 hits theaters next summer. If there’s money to be made, then there’s no reason why Marvel and Epic Games wouldn’t team up again. Of course, the crossover event’s success can only mean that more limited time events coming down the line.
