The FOX TV lineup for the fall 2019 season will look remarkably different than in past years, as the network realigns itself with a greater emphasis on sports and some returning animated hits. The new schedule isn’t too surprising in the wake of Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox assets, putting the network in an uncertain position with regard to the 2019-20 television season.
The new schedule was announced ahead of the network’s upfronts presentation to potential advertisers, and comes on the heels of the network announcing a number of cancelations, including The Passage and The Cool Kids. In addition to the cancelations of various freshman series, FOX is clearly scaling back its primetime lineup, focusing on hour-long dramas like 9-1-1 and Empire (which will be entering its sixth and final season). Meanwhile, the network has announced it will start the fall season with two new dramas Prodigal Son from Arrowverse mastermind Greg Berlanti, which stars Michael Sheen. Then there’s Not Just Me, from executive producer Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights, Parenthood), as well as the animated comedy Bless the Harts.

Though FOX’s fall lineup looks a bit more anemic than in years past, the network has quite a few new series at the ready for midseason premieres. Those include the 9-1-1 spinoff, 9-1-1: Lone Star, starring Rob Lowe, as well as Deputy, a modern-day Wester from Aquaman writer Will Beal and Suicide Squad director David Ayer. The FOX midseason will also feature the Southern Gothic family drama Filthy Rich, as well as the AI-based technothriller neXt. Midseason also brings the comedy Duncanville from executive producer Amy Poehler, and the blue-collar multi-cam sitcom Outmatched, starring Jason Biggs. It looks as though FOX will deliver its 2019-2020 lineup in smaller batches, opting to take a step back from the usual fall deluge of new broadcast network content. Whether or not that strategy will work remains to be seen, but it could signal a huge change for the network’s future beyond 2020.
